Born and raised in Southern Africa, I migrated with my parents to the Netherlands in the mid-60’s. I have worked as farm hand for experience, money and as part of doing research. Listening and respecting people is a value that was greatly treasured in my upbringing and my professional career and is possibly my most developed quality; this includes asking different types of questions (e.g. examples, open, quirky and uncomfortable questions). Civil or plural society formation and space, including principles of self-organisation have been a red thread in my professional career. I have had many different roles in civil society organisations, such as chairman, external and internal advisor, manager, (senior) program officer, section head, reviewer, advisory board member etc.. I have set up and worked with civil society organisations in a range of African and European countries. I have witnessed the impact of corruption, poor governance and failure to face the future from in and outside civil society organisation. Since my second migration from Africa, just before the millennium year, I have settled in the Netherlands and am involved in a variety of roles in civil society organisations, such as: volunteer, interim-manager, consultant, delegate and treasurer. Recently I initiated a successful collaborative project for refugee children with three international child focused organizations based on building on what is present, shared values (child focused, ambition to make a difference, generative leadership) and intervening in a ‘work domain’ of system failure.
